About Stockbridge
The Town of Stockbridge Massachusetts was founded in 1793 and is located in Berkshire County.

There is so much to do in Stockbridge and those in town should take a drive down the most famous Main Street in America which was painted by Norman Rockwell. There are many historical homes in the town which include the Merwin House and the Mission House as well as Naumkeag. Other attractions I the community are the Chesterwood Museum and the studio of Daniel Chester French who was the sculptor of “The Minute Man” and the Lincoln Memorial. There is also the new Rockwell museum as well as the Berkshire Botanical Garden and Tanglewood which is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Now days the town is a quiet rural bedroom community with a lot of history as well as integrity for the future!

Trip and Trail Details: Stockbridge Hike & Paddle, dog friendly

Come join us on this dog-friendly day in the Berkshires! We begin with a short, 1 mile hike to Ice Glen on a trail that winds around giant boulders in a glacial ravine. The sides of the glen are covered with old stand pine and hemlock. The crannies in the rocks often have ice and snow into the summer. At the end of the glen is perhaps the tallest pine in Massachusetts. We'll finish with a gradually ascending 1.5 mile hike through ancient pines and hemlocks, to a tower with a panoramic view of the Berkshires and Mt. Greylock. We can stop for lunch there if people like. Afterward, we can make our way down to the other side of the river and cross the athletic fields to the put-in. In the afternoon, we'll paddle on the Housatonic River from the center of Stockbridge to Glendale Bridge. The river at this point is quiet with many meanders, some downed trees, and a section through the Stockbridge golf course. If the dogs are quiet, we may see otters or orioles. The surroundings are lovely, with some forested banks and views of the Berkshire hills in the distance. There will be a car shuttle involved.

The dogs will have fun playing in the water.

Dog Rules

  • All dogs must be leashed at the trail head
  • Never allow your dog to meet another dog or persons without permission for the handler
  • If you have children, explain they should never pet/play or tease any other dog
  • If you allow your dog off leash you must:
    • o Leash your dog near roads
    • o Leash your dog if we meet any person, other dogs or wildlife
    • o Leash your dog if we stop for any breaks
    • Clean up after your dog and carry it out

From Mass Pike (Lee exit): Take a left off the exit ramp (MA 20) and immediately take a right onto MA 102 west. Follow to Stockbridge and junction with US 7. Turn left onto US 7 and travel 0.2 mile to Park Road. Turn left onto Park Street and follow it to its end.
